When you think of college, what comes to your mind? Images of intense partying and drinking? Well, that’s how movies portray it, and surprisingly they’re not wrong. Students, specifically freshman, undergo extreme measures to prove their allegiance to sororities and fraternities. Leading to various forms of hazing, consisting of emotional abuse, physical abuse, or a combination of both. A significant number of students who experience hazing leave with emotional trauma and some don’t ever leave again.

These college students just want to fit in. They want to feel accepted in a similar way that people feel in High School. After decades of hazing for many schools, certain sororities and fraternities are finally being closed for good. After reading all of these hazing stories, you will be glad they are.

Fraternity Hazing Stories

1. Phi Delta Theta fraternity – Louisiana State University

In October 2017, ten members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity were arrested on hazing charges. The victim, 18-year-old Maxwell Gruver, died the previous month after being subjected to a brutal hazing ritual called “Bible Study”. The “Bible Study” ritual involved the pledges being covered in hot sauce and mustard and then faced towards the wall. After answering questions incorrectly, Gruver was forced to drink an obscene amount of alcohol. Leading to him being found unconscious and later declared dead by a hospital.

2. Pi Delta Psi fraternity – Baruch College

In December 2013, five members of the Pi Delta Psi fraternity were arrested for murder. The victim, 18-year-old Chun (Michael) Deng, died while “trying to fit into a fraternity”. The hazing ritual involved forcing Michael to carry a 20-pound bag of sand blindfolded while they “speared” him. After he passed out from the encounter, he was taken to a hospital, where he later died from a brain injury. The fraternity brothers were charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and hazing.

Fraternities Can Go Too Far

3. Pi Alpha Kappa fraternity – Tulane University

In April 2008, ten members of Phi Alpha Kappa fraternity were arrested for aggravated second-degree battery. Two pledges were treated for severe burns from the incident but survived the ordeal. The hazing ritual involved the pouring of boiling water with pepper spray on the pledges back. Causing second-and-third degree burns to one student’s back, chest, and genitals. The fraternity brothers appeared in court where they were sentenced for their brutalization of the young man.

4. Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity – Florida State University

In January 2007, two members of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity were arrested for hazing. The victim was hospitalized after the abuse and needed surgery to heal from the paddling. One of the members was hurting the pledge with the paddle while the other member would wake him up when he would pass out from pain. The judge in the case added an extra year to the sentence to make this a deterrent for people committing hazing.  

Sorority Hazing Stories

1. Alpha Omicron Pi sorority – State University of New York

In November 2016, seven members of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority were arrested for misdemeanor hazing charges. After neighbors reported hearing loud noises, four women were found undergoing hazing rituals in a basement. During the hazing ritual, the girls would be stepping on the pledges with high heels and yelling profanities at them. In an attempt to make them feel worthless.

2. Sigma Gamma Rho sorority – Rutgers University

In January 2010, six members of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority were arrested for aggravated hazing. The victim and many other pledges were beaten with large wooden paddles. One pledge had to be hospitalized for blood clots. Around 200 beatings with the paddle took place over that week time period. This practice was done to keep the pledges “humble”.

3. Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority – California State University  

In September 2002, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority forced pledges to do strenuous physical labor before going into the ocean. The victim, 22-year-old Kristin High’s body was found off of Dockweiler State Beach. A private investigation discovered that the girls were blindfolded before being forced into the water. Kristin and the other girl’s death was due to a hazing ritual.


Hazing in college is a real problem in America today. Some people make light of it and think it’s all in good fun, but it’s dangerous. No parent wants their child subjected to this type of abuse. If you’re a concerned parent and notice your child is acting different, this may be happening to them at college. Prevent this from happening to your child.
