It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was high school and while many of us would like to forget those four years of awkward hell, there are some people we came across that made us who we are today. So, how do you find classmates today?
Even if you weren’t popular, it is likely that you had at least one friend in high school and as the years go by, it is easy to lose touch with those you were once so close with just a few years ago.
People change as they grow, life happens, people move, go to school, get married, have families and we are left to wonder what they are doing now.
People Lose Touch
It’s really sad when good friends lose touch, but it even happens with the best of buds. College opens new doors, some joined the military, some stayed behind. Regardless of life’s path, we all seem to find different ones as we journey through our lives.
When you lose touch with someone you were once close with, you can often find yourself wondering whatever happened to that person. Maybe you met up once during the holiday break, maybe you attended each other’s weddings, but eventually time and distance took its toll.
Whether you come across an old picture, or are reminiscing about a great story from your past, there comes a time in everyone’s life when they start to wonder about what happened to our long lost friends, our enemies or frenemies in our graduating class. It could be that you have a class reunion coming up or just want to reconnect. There are lots of reasons why you would want to find old friends from high school.
Before the internet, it was difficult for people to keep in touch. Unless you stayed in your home town or updated school alumni records each time you moved, it was easy for classmates to disappear and for you to never hear from them again.
Now with things like Facebook, emailing, social networking, and people search engines, it is easy to find and reconnect with old friends.
How To Find Classmates
This is the original way people reconnected with their old chums. Many people dread their high school reunions, but some find it refreshing to take a minute to step into the past. Reunions are a great way to reconnect with old friends from high school. The only problem is they only happen roughly every 10 years and unless you are in touch with those on the planning committee, it is quite possible you can miss your opportunity for that one night of reliving the good old days.
Luckily for us, the internet has made it easier to connect with old friends we lost touch with.
Look For Them Online
Facebook and social media in general is a great way to find old classmates. Whether you are looking to reconnect or just want to do a little snooping to see how much better you are doing than they are. (No judgements here) A simple Facebook search can come up with a number of your old classmates that you can friend and start reconnecting (or hate following, again, no judgments).
If you want to look for your old classmates from high school on Facebook there are a few ways you can go about it.
- Facebook Groups
The first way is to search for community groups of your graduating class. Many of these groups are already created by fellow alumni who are also looking to reconnect. These groups are a great way to share old photos, stories and plan reunions.
- Use Your Friends List
Another way to find old classmates on Facebook is to find someone in your friends list who you went to high school with. Then go through their friends list to see if there are any other people from school you wish to friend.
Name Searches On Facebook Can Be Tricky
People get married or might be using a pseudonym that can prevent you from finding the person you are looking for. Also there might be 10,000 Betty Sue McClaren’s on Facebook and after 25 years she might look very different than you remember.
Another fallback of a Facebook search to find people is the simple fact that not everyone is on Facebook. Even if they are, they might not be searchable due to security settings. And if you happen to find an old classmate on Facebook, they may not be active or have any contact info listed. This could make reconnecting very difficult.
Online Person Searches
Another great way to look someone up on the internet is by doing a person search
A person search allows you to type in a name and through a public records search, you can find just about anyone. And because online person searches list past addresses and relatives you can easily search for an old classmate.
Person searches also lists current addresses, known phone numbers, and sometimes their email address so you can better reach out to them.
Other Things You Can Find Out About An Old Classmate WIth A Person Search (That You Can’t Find Out On Facebook)
- Address History
- Criminal Records
- Bankruptcies, Liens & Judgments
- Work History
Because let’s face it maybe we want to just see what a person from our past is up to without actually reconnecting.
Tomorrow Is Not Promised Today
The past is an important part of who we are and while it seems like we have forever to catch up with old friends, unfortunately that is not always the case. Many times the next opportunity you have to meet up with an old friend is at their funeral.
Don’t waste time wishing you can reconnect with the past when with the internet you can easily search for that old friend you haven’t seen in years. Taking a few minutes to look up a person and making a phone call can rekindle a friendship that you thought was long gone.
