When it comes to the safety of our children, there is probably nothing more important than keeping them out of the reach of sex offenders. You may know your neighbors by name, or you talk to each other every now and then, but, unless you do a thorough investigation, you never really know them or if they are hiding any secrets.

We want to believe that our neighborhood is safe for our children. That they can play on the streets with other kids without us, as parents, needing to keep an eye on them every minute. Especially during Halloween, where our kids will be knocking on countless doors well into the night. If there are sex offenders in your neighborhood, you’ll want to know exactly where they reside.

If you think that things like this won’t happen to your kids, then you should consider looking at the numbers that a 2022 research came up with:

1 in every 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.

  • If that number is broken down by gender, it is 1 in every 25 for boys, and 1 in every 7 for girls.
  • 90% of abuse cases are committed by someone already known to the child. This could mean somebody in the family, someone in the child’s school, or a person in the neighborhood.
  • As of 2022, there are around 770,000 registered sex offenders across the United States. While it is noted that this number is not accurate, the real number should not be far off. Regardless of its accuracy, it is still a high number and it is information that should always be in the back of your head.

With such staggering numbers, we should learn to be wary about the people in our community. No matter how much we think we already know them. Here are 4 ways to quickly locate neighborhood sex offenders:

1. Conduct A Search In The Official Sex Offender Website

The best way to search sex offenders in your neighborhood is to head to nsopw.gov, or the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public website. Operated by the Department of Justice, it allows you to search the sex offender registry of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and Native American tribal jurisdictions. You can  choose to search a person by name or use set parameters to get a list of sex offenders’ adresses in your city, town, and zip code, including searching within a specific radius of your home.

There could be limitations and inaccuracies to this method though. The amount of info you get in return will depend on where you live. Some states don’t provide much detail about past offenders, or only require them to register briefly. On the other hand, some states offer too much information. For example, Florida’s registry includes names of people who do not live there and are merely passing through the state, staying for at least 3 days.Their list also includes those removed from other state registries.

The site might also not be updated as quickly as you would like it to be.

2. Look At An Offenders’ Map

The popular website Familywatchdog.us allows parents to get a color-coded neighborhood sex offenders map. Sex offenders listed by type of offense they have committed: whether it was against a child, rape, or battery. They are also filtered according to  addresses and proximity to local schools. Underneath each offender’s photo is a link to see more information on the charges against them, including any aliases they may have used. You can sign up to be notified when offenders move in or out of your area. Best of all, the information on this site is updated daily.

3. Download A Smart Phone App

OffenderWatch is a free app  that acts like your local neighborhood watch, except it is online and is specifically used to search for sex offenders in your neighborhood. While it offers much of the same info provided by the sites above, the app allows its users to submit tips about particular offenders and contact law enforcement when needed.

Another important feature of OffenderWatch is a tracking feature that alerts parents if a registered offender is trying to contact your kids through texts, calls, or emails. Parents can also be notified if their child is within the vicinity of a sex offender’s home for an extended period of time.

4. Do A Little Detective Work

What if someone in your community has not registered? Or he or she might be working on committing their first sinister act and has their eyes set on your kid to be the victim? The above methods will not work because his or her name will not appear in any of the registries.

If your gut tells you that something is not right with someone who is in contact with your child, then it is best to err on the side of safety and take action and find out more about the person in question. One of the quickest ways to gather information on someone is to run their name on a People Finder Service. Kiwi Searches is one of the best People Search Services available. This specialized search engine will scour all public records and everything else on the internet that might be connected to the person you searched for.

Court and arrest records, aliases and phone numbers connected to the person will be made available to you in real-time. Even the last known location can possibly be determined.

If you don’t have a name but only a phone number, Kiwi Searches can still work for you with its Reverse Phone Number Search Service

Just because no instances of sexual preadation has happened in your area doesn’t mean it will never happen. Don’t be complacent and fall into a false sense of security. Many offenders have simply not yet been caught, much less convicted and placed into the registry.

Always keep an eye out on your child’s surroundings. Monitor the people who come in contact with them. Always remember, you, as parents, are the first line of defense of your children. Maybe even the best.
