Sandy Hook Promise, a national nonprofit organization based in Newtown, CT, released a shocking and chilling Back-To-School PSA. The purpose of the Sandy Hook PSA, “Back-To-School Essentials”, is to: Highlight the anxiety and fear students face in the reality of school shootings,” according to their press release

The acceptance that school shootings can happen at any University, Elementary, Middle, or High School has become the new normal. Sandy Hook Promise wants students, educators, and parents to be aware that it doesn’t have to be this way. Being educated on the early warning signs and preventative strategies can make all of the difference.

After watching the video, you see that an unconventional approach was taken to highlight the topic of school shootings. Students using back-to-school items during a school shooting situation. It’s hard to watch a girl text her mom and family members “I love you”, as her possible final words. The video overall is a bit over-dramatized, but the point still comes across effectively. 

The 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary is still a reminder that these events should not be taken lightly, and the awareness surrounding them must continue to improve. This year alone (as of May 2019), there have been 22 shootings at schools in the U.S., where students were either injured or killed (CNN). 

As a member of your community, you must do your part to educate those around you about school shootings, and what can be done to identify and prevent them.
